community radio to Geneva, New York and the surrounding Finger Lakes
region, I am pleased to say that Geneva Community Radio is Back, and
poised to be better than ever.

On February 7th, 2024, Geneva
Community Projects, an established non-profit 501(c)3 charitable
organization, received a Construction Permit from the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) to build a new low power FM (LPFM) radio
station to serve Geneva at 104.1 FM with the call letters WGCC "We're
Geneva's Community Connection".

We now have a second opportunity
to bring a unique non-profit and non-commercial radio service to our
community. A radio service that will enhance, enrich and strengthen our
community, and one that will bring diverse elements of our community
closer together.

This new station will offer a diverse mix of
music and spoken word programming, appealing to a wide range of tastes
and interests within the Geneva community. Local residents will be
encouraged to become volunteer DJs and show hosts, expressing themselves
in a unique and creative manner for their friends and neighbors to hear
and enjoy. The station will offer programming that gives a voice to
music and ideas that are not heard on existing local radio stations.

In
the coming months, we will be active in the community as we attempt to
raise the money needed to build this new station. So please bookmark
this site and come back often for further updates.
Yes. Geneva Community Radio is back, and this time, it's here to stay! We are relocating our streaming setup. We will now have separate locations for our production facilities, still inside the Geneva Community Center, and our streaming operation will be moved back to its former base on Hamilton Street in Geneva.

This is being done to accommodate The Boys and Girls Club of Geneva which is in need of our former space in the community center for future club projects.
We will restore full time GCR streaming service as soon as possible. Check this space for the return of our normal program schedule.
We are very proud of our diverse programming, and we are always seeking out compelling new shows to make our station even better than before.

We have several new musical offerings, including Compact Discoveries, Center Stage From Wolf Trap, Jazz From the Left, Earthsongs, and Juke in the Back. We've also moved the popular World music show Global Village With Chris Heim to a Monday thru Friday evening time slot.

We've also added new spoken word offerings, including more excellent programs from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Don't worry. All the great programs you've come to expect from GCR are still here. We've shifted the times of some programs to give our schedule a better flow. The complete, up to date program schedule is now posted on this website. Check it out!

After eight months of waiting for the FCC to rule on our Petition for Reconsideration, we received word on November 3rd that the petition has been denied. The commission strongly disagreed with the claims made by our engineering consultants. At this point, it appears that any hope of Geneva Community Radio obtaining a Low Power FM license, during this round of applications at least, is now gone.

Words cannot express the disappointment felt by everyone connected with the radio station. However, GCR remains committed to providing quality programming to a global audience on our webcast. As far as gaining access to a local radio frequency, we are determined to explore all paths to make this happen. Our next step is to try and reach out to other local broadcasters to determine if some kind of partnership could be developed to put some or all of GCR's programming on the local radio dial. Beyond that, we will look to the next opportunity to file a new application with the FCC, either for Low Power FM, or a "full power" Non-Commercial Educational (NCE) license. As of now, we know of no plans to open a filing window for either service anytime soon.

As always, watch this space for further updates.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support, as we remain determined to bring community radio to our region despite the obstacles placed in our path.
She served as the station's secretary. She also produced and hosted the eclectic music program Radio Tolerance every Thursday night on GCR. Additionally, she played a part in some of the first training sessions for teens at the Boys and Girls Club who were interested in learning to produce their own radio programs. During her time at the station, she came up with many creative ideas for everything from station promotion to fundraising. She was also responsible for the very tedious, but necessary, task of compiling and submitting all of the station's music playlists to our streaming provider every month.

Earlier this week, Kari announced that she would be leaving the area, and returning to her native Oswego County to be closer to family.

She has generously volunteered to continue to help GCR on a limited, temporary basis from her new home, until we can find a local volunteer to fill her position.

While we are sorry to lose someone with the kind of creativity and enthusiasm that Kari clearly possessed, we wish her well in all her future endeavors, and we cannot thank her enough for everything she has done for the station.

We'll miss you, Kari.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8099927341851949657.post-80654268829382051422014-08-12T00:19:00.003-04:002014-08-12T00:19:55.272-04:00Radio Australia to Cancel Asia PacificWe regret to inform our listeners that, due to drastic budget cuts to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's international service, Radio Australia, the daily news magazine Asia Pacific will no longer be available to us. The final edition of Asia Pacific will air this Friday, August 15th, at 6:00 AM.

Starting Monday, August 18th, Geneva Community Radio will begin airing Daybreak Asia, a daily morning news magazine program from the Voice of America. We sincerely hope that listeners of Asia Pacific will find this new program to be just as informative.

Also, be advised that GCR is planning more schedule changes which will take effect in September. These changes are designed to make the station's programming even more diverse, and also to accommodate several listener requests and suggestions. Watch this space soon for further details.

The reason for the dismissal has to do with spacing issues with a local FM translator station. Our consultants tell us this was the result of an error in the FCC database at the time our application was filed.

Currently, our consulting engineers are working on a Petition for Reconsideration, in hopes that our application will be reinstated.

If our Petition for Reconsideration is rejected, and the ruling is final, we intend to explore other options in order to get a new community radio service on the air.

At this time, I want to personally thank all of our supporters for sticking with us even through this hardship. I especially want to thank the staff and board of the Boys and Girls Club of Geneva for their willingness to continue pursuing this project.

As always, you can check this space for updates. As soon as we know more as to the next steps we will take, we will post that info here.
In an American media landscape dominated by meaningless stories that pass as serious news, GCR strives to bring you in depth reports from some of the world's top public broadcasters. Effective Monday, December 16th, GCR will make changes to its international news lineup. We regret to inform our listeners that we no longer have access to on demand audio from IBA, or Kol Israel. This is because the World Radio Network (WRN) has suspended its audio on demand service. GCR relied on this service to bring us the IBA feed each weekday morning, and there does not appear to be a suitable replacement for this feed on the IBA website. GCR will continue to air "live" WRN programming from 2:00 to 6:00 A.M. Monday to Friday. In Kol Israel's former time slot, we will now be running a 15 minute version of Deutsche Welle's news magazine, Journal. GCR is also very pleased to announce the addition of a new broadcaster to our international news lineup. Effective Monday, GCR will begin airing select programming from the Voice of America (VOA), the flagship US international broadcasting service. This will give GCR listeners yet another perspecitve on the events shaping our world. We will air two daily news magazines from VOA. Daybreak Africa, weekday mornings at 6:35, and International Edition, weeknights at 7:05, as part of a new nightly news hour. The second half of that hour will be occupied by Deutsche Welle's Africa Link, now at a more appropriate time, as the show is intended from afternoon/evening clearance.
These changes are being implemented for a combination of two reasons.

1). It was recently announced by WWFM, also known as The Classical Network, that the weekly Chamber music program Indivisible by Four with host Carl Hemmingsen would be cancelled. This has now come to pass. As always, Geneva Community Radio regrets the cancellation of such high quality programming. Unfortunately, budget cuts at WWFM have required that station to cut the number of specialty programs produced for syndication. This is a situation that is beyond Geneva Community Radio's control.

WWFM has offered a new program to Geneva Community Radio. Curtis Calls, which is also hosted by Carl Hemmingsen. This weekly program features recitals from faculty and students at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. The show will air Wednesday afternoons at 3:00.

2). With the cancellation of Indivisible by Four and the addition of Curtis Calls, Geneva Community Radio re-evaluated the positions of all of its Classical programming. We will now schedule these shows by common theme wherever possible. For example, Monday afternoons will feature shows that concentrate on a particular instrument or group of instruments in the Classical realm. Thursday's offerings will now focus exclusively on the more contemporary aspects of Classical music, and a portion of Sunday's block will feature three hours of music from the Early, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. This block will include the programs Harmonia, Distant Mirror (now a one-hour program featuring Early and Renaissance music), and the new offering Tafelmusik, featuring an hour of pieces from the Baroque era.

We hope you will enjoy our new Classical music lineup. As always, your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Feel free to e-mail or call the station with your thoughts and ideas.

The program schedule page has been updated to reflect all of the changes.

Thank you for your continued support of Geneva Community Radio.

As the financial crisis at Pacifica deepens, Free Speech Radio News, which relies heavily on funding from Pacifica, will cease production this Friday, 9/27.

As a result of this development, Geneva Community Radio will be implementing a new schedule on weeknights between 6 and 7 PM. Be sure to check our schedule page later this week for full details.
We hope you will enjoy the new lineup, including several programs that are new to GCR.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8099927341851949657.post-40759231318280330832013-09-16T15:24:00.001-04:002013-11-15T10:07:51.711-05:00GCR Announces Partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of GenevaGeneva Community Radio is pleased to announce a partnership with The Boys And Girls Club of Geneva.

This partnership was many months in the making. and will ensure a sound future for the radio station. It will present new opportunities for youth, teens, and other members of the Geneva community to produce new and exciting content.

Also, the Boys and Girls Club will act as the licensee of our proposed low power FM station.

The first major development in this partnership was a move of the GCR studio into the Geneva Community Center at 160 Carter Road. We anticipate this will be the first of many exciting developments for the station.

There will be no immediate programming changes as a result of this partnership. GCR still maintains its commitment to broadcast diverse programming from around the world, and from within our community.

If you have questions regarding this partnership, please e-mail the station at genevaradio@yahoo.com, or give us a call at (315) 308-4272.

Thank you for your continued support of community radio in the central Finger Lakes.

It is my sad duty to inform you of the passing of Terry Doyle, host of the 'Imprint' radio show which was heard on several community radio stations across upstate NY, including Geneva Community Radio.

The details of his passing are still sketchy at this point. We do know that he suffered a heart attack a couple of weeks back, and had been recovering in a Cooperstown hospital. He e-mailed his affiliates earlier this week, advising them that production of the anual 'Imprint Awards Special' would be delayed until next week. Then came the tragic news of his passing on Wednesday, 2/6. My thanks to Gary Wickham at WUOW in Oneonta for sending word of his passing.

We at Geneva Community Radio are proud to have known Terry, and to have been an affiliate of the 'Imprint' program until the very end. This is a tragic loss for local music in upstate NY. To be sure, his program was unique. There will never be another show like 'Imprint'.

We will air the final episode of 'Imprint' one last time this Friday, 2/8, at 4:00 PM. It is unclear at this point what will replace the program in this time slot. Please keep checking this blog, and the schedule page, for those details as they become available.
The New Year is bringing a few changes to the GCR schedule. Here they are:

Soundscape 100 Ceases Production

The weekly pop music program from DW Radio has been cancelled. We regret this, as it was a truly unique program as far as pop music shows go. Unfortunately, it's out of our hands.

This will set in motion several schedule changes.

On Friday evenings, the lineup between 8 and 10 PM will look like this:

8:00 World in Progress
8:30 Pulse
9:00 The Treatment
9:30 The Business

World in Progress had been airing Sunday afternoons. Thus, a few changes to the Sunday schedule to avoid duplication, and to ensure diversity in our weekly schedule.

We are pleased to announce the addition of three short weekly magazines from UN Radio. Between 3:00 and 3:30 PM, we will air UN Calling Asia, UN and Africa, and Women, respectively. This will be followed by:

3:30 Dateline Pacific
4:00 The Shortwave Report
4:30 Voices of Our World

Lastly, a change to our block of media related shows. We've decided to try a new show during this block. Media Network Plus is a production of PCJ Media. We felt it would be a better fit with Glenn Hauser's World of Radio. We may consider expanding the media block in the future, at which time we could consider bringing back the International Radio Report, along with the possibility of adding one or two other shows we'd like to add.

As always, we'd like your feedback. Your input is critical when it comes to deciding what programs we air. Send us your feedback. Tell us what you want to hear (and even what you DON'T want to hear) on Geneva Community Radio.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
